Hymns and Heartsongs
with Dr. Theresa Steward on piano
Music has the power to soothe, to heal, to comfort, to encourage, and to uplift. As we coped with loss and learned how to adapt to new daily rhythms in our lives during a pandemic, music has been a balm. This program tells a story of spiritual music that has provided peace and solace, comfort and care, joy and gratitude over the last year and a half in the lives of the faith community of Grace Baptist Church in Richmond and beyond. Many of these pieces were shared as recordings over social media and online for worship services, memorial services, birthdays, graduations, and virtual concerts. Some are soothing arrangements of beloved hymn tunes, and others are heartsongs or familiar pieces that provide peace or a burst of joy in much needed moments in our lives.
Dr. Theresa Steward is a musician and musicologist living and working in Richmond. She has studied music at the University of Virginia and the University of Edinburgh (UK). Her research and publications have focused on Iranian popular music studies, but these days she finds herself writing about her spiritual journey as a Muslim working in a Baptist church. Theresa is currently the organist and pianist at Grace Baptist Church, and she is also a certified mind-body instructor in yoga, pilates, and barre formats.
