Happy Birthday, Charles Fillmore!

Happy Birthday, Charles Fillmore!

Our cofounder, Charles Sherlock Fillmore (1854–1948) was born on Aug. 22 near St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Fillmores started the Unity movement in 1889 in Kansas City. With a deep conviction in the indwelling presence of God, they taught that spiritual growth comes from awakening the divine potential within.

The Fillmores inspired many to embrace affirmative prayer, conscious living, and unity with all creation. Charles insisted that the “true church” is the heart of each person. He was committed to service, healing, and a spirituality that is practical, compassionate, and deeply personal.

Three Quotes by Charles Fillmore

"The true church is not made of creeds and forms, nor is it contained in walls of wood and stone. The heart of man is its temple."
 - Jesus Christ Heals, p. 3

"Here is a mental treatment guaranteed to cure every ill that flesh is heir to: Sit for half an hour every night and forgive everyone against whom you have any ill will or antipathy."

- Keep a True Lent, p. 164

"Words are also seeds, and when dropped into the invisible spiritual substance, they grow and bring forth after their kind."
- Prosperity, p. 51

As we celebrate the gift of Charles, may we remember that we are a divine gift to the world also. We keep the flow of love going that he ignited with his teaching and writings. We are up to BIG things - making a world that works for all united in peace and purpose.

A prayer written by Charles called, "The Great Invocation" is below.

Oodles of love,
