In the wake of my brother’s death, I am thinking about a life well lived. I’m inviting you into the conversation. What really matters as we share our consciousness on this planet? I listened to a few podcasts and tuned into my heart.
I come back to the things that define the lives of those who inspire me. Love, connection, joy and generously sharing are the biggies. When one is at a celebration of life service, we don’t ask, "What kind of car did he drive? or Where did he get his PhD?" We ask, "How did this person impact my life, my thoughts and my actions?" How am I different because of who he/she was?"
The stories people share have to do with the joy that that person expressed through their passion and their work. They talk about loving kindness, being seen and heard, a word or action of encouragement, a time of playing together when laughter erupted, or a financial gift that made a big difference. All these are generous expressions of how that person helped us become fully ourselves. WHAT A GIFT!
When we are present with one another in love, we discover the power, strength and courage that was there all along. So even after a loved one exits, the gift they gave endures. We stand on the foundation of their love and their belief in the greatness in us.
So, I am inviting each of us to keep investing in love and in time together doing simple things and having fantastic adventures. Keep "connecting" a priority. We know not to worry about the big raise, the big car or the fancy home. There is nothing greater than love, as 1 Corinthians 13 reports. Maya Angelou reminds us, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
May we walk in the steps of our Wayshower and leave people knowing the truth of their being – they are indeed love and absolutely lovable. That feels mighty good!
