A story that touched me this week told of an Oklahoma mother whose son came out as gay and her church was not an affirming place. She initially would not accept her son but has come full circle. She had to question authority, her heart and her faith. She discovered a church that affirms and celebrates her love for her son and the community. She started Free Mom Hugs to accept and welcome any individual into an embrace.
She knew that many young people were excluded from their family circle once they shared their lifestyle choice. One young woman said she had been estranged for four years and had not been hugged by her mom during that time. This is a story of zeal. A woman who knows that every person is made in the image and likeness of the divine, knows that everyone has value. She is a stand for loving, connecting and allowing people to follow their truth. She will go stand in as a mom for someone getting married whose parents will not come. I love her devotion to creating connection and empowering those on the edge.
Sara’s passion is to change the perspective of the culture so that we, as a society, not only learn to affirm but celebrate. Her goal is to help parents and children have authentic relationships and understanding for each other using her own experience and education as a guide. Her goal is to make the world a kinder, safer place for our LGBTQIA+ family. She is inspiring others to do join her and do the same!
We can have a world that knows all humans are beautiful and understands each other as equals. We can have a world where no one is shunned or shamed. It is a consciousness that honors oneness. It is the consciousness that Jesus lived, that Buddha lived and that the Dali Lama lives now.
May we be so bold as to discover our truth, our passion, and live it out loud so that one by one, each person experiences love for who they are. Diversity is an amazing expression of the One Love from which we all come. Follow the fire in your heart - hug, teach, bake, sew, garden, build, make a podcast or whatever lights up your being as you connect with others. This is what our world needs - hearts on fire with love.
